Fractal Audio Axe-Fx III · FM9 · FM3
The Fractals Compared
Fractal Audio stands for uncompromising sound quality, unmatched flexibility and the gold-standard in digital guitar processing. Trusted by professionals on the world’s biggest stages, every unit in the Fractal family delivers authentic tube-amp tone coupled with world-class effects. The three core products — the Axe-Fx III MK II Turbo, the FM9 MK II Turbo and the FM3 MK II Turbo — share the same award-winning Fractal sound, yet differ in processor count, DSP headroom, I/O options and live-rig versatility. Each model is optimised for a distinct set of requirements. When you finish reading, be sure to consult the comparison table for a concise, side-by-side overview of every feature.
Shared Foundation: Premium Modelling & Flexible Signal Paths
Cygnus Amp Modelling
All current Fractal processors run the latest Cygnus Amp Modelling engine. Classic and modern tube amplifiers are recreated in microscopic detail down to virtual valves, transformers and tone stacks, giving you the touch sensitivity and dynamics of the real thing in every model.
Gapless Switching — Seamless Scene & Channel Changes
Switch scenes or presets instantly — no audio drop-outs, no lost reverb tails. On stage you can jump from shimmering clean with long hall to a full-bore high-gain rhythm tone without a single hiccup.
Extensive Effects & Blocks
Choose from 320 amp models — and counting. On the FM3 you get one Amp block per preset (four channels for quick switching). The FM9 and Axe-Fx III take it further with two Amp blocks per preset, enabling up to eight amplifier channels that can be layered or toggled in real time.
Speaker simulation is just as sophisticated. DynaCab™ lets you freely position virtual microphones; UltraRes™ delivers extra-high-resolution IRs without intolerable latency. The FM3 supplies one Cab block with two IR slots (including stereo mode). FM9 offers two Cab blocks with two IR slots each. Axe-Fx III provides two Cab blocks with four IR slots each, plus two mini IR-player blocks for complex multi-mic blends.
Beyond amps and cabs you’ll find an enormous palette of effects — Drive, Delay, Reverb, Modulation (Chorus, Flanger, Rotary, Phaser), Pitch (Intelligent Harmoniser, Detune, Virtual Capo, Octaver) and a full arsenal of Filters and EQs. The real differences lie in the number of simultaneous block instances (for example, two versus four Delay blocks). Full details are in the table or the Blocks Guide.
Intuitive Workflow & Powerful Editors
Every Fractal unit features an onboard full-colour display (plus mini displays on the floorboards) and dedicated hardware controls. The free editors — Axe-Edit, FM9-Edit and FM3-Edit — bring drag-and-drop routing, copy-and-paste, Quick Build, libraries, set-lists and song-lists to your Mac or PC for lightning-fast sound design.
Performance Controls place critical parameters such as Gain, Master Volume and Delay Mix under dedicated quick-access knobs. All models employ the powerful Modifier system, so MIDI, expression pedals, LFOs, ADSRs or sequencers can automate almost any parameter in real time.
Axe-Fx III MK II Turbo: Rack Flagship with Maximum Power
Form Factor & DSP Power
The Axe-Fx III MK II Turbo is a 3U, 19″ rackmount that packs 25 % more DSP than the standard Axe-Fx III. Even the most elaborate, studio-grade presets with multiple parallel signal chains and advanced effect routings are handled with ease.
Dual Amp & Advanced Cab Blocks
Create massive stereo rigs or rapid channel-switching setups using two Amp blocks (four channels each). Each preset can also host two Cab blocks with four IR slots apiece, plus two mini IR players for extra captures, auxiliary room mics or artist-specific blends.
Comprehensive I/O
With eight analogue inputs (including a front guitar jack) and nine analogue outputs (XLR, Humbuster ¼″, headphones and more) the Axe-Fx III is ready for complex monitoring, wet-dry-wet rigs, re-amping and multichannel recording. Digital connectivity includes AES/EBU, S/PDIF and an 8×8 USB interface. Up to four FC foot controllers connect via FASLINK II.
Tone Matching & IR Capture
Exclusive to the Axe-Fx III, the Tone Match block morphs a preset’s sound to match a reference recording or the feed from a miked amp. The built-in IR Capture function lets you sample real cabinets, speakers, microphones or rooms to create fully bespoke impulse responses. Only the Axe-Fx III also offers Global Blocks, making it easy to share identical amp or effect settings across multiple presets.
Typical Use Case
Think David Gilmour’s legendary multi-rack rigs — now condensed into a single, tour-worthy unit. If you need unprecedented power, routing freedom, elaborate effect chains and top-shelf studio quality, the Axe-Fx III MK II Turbo is your ultimate solution.
FM9 MK II Turbo: Powerful Floorboard with Nine Footswitches
Form Factor & Concept
The FM9 MK II Turbo is a rugged floor unit housed in powder-coated steel. Nine footswitches each sport an LCD mini display and a coloured LED ring. A quad-core DSP provides a sweet spot of power between the Axe-Fx III and FM3, and the Turbo upgrade delivers an extra 10 % DSP headroom.
Amp & Effects Capability
Design versatile rigs with two Amp blocks and two Cab blocks (two IR slots each, including stereo mode). Compared to the FM3, the FM9 offers more Drive, Reverb, Compressor and Delay blocks, yet remains slightly leaner than the Axe-Fx III (exact numbers in the table or the Blocks Guide).
I/O
Five analogue inputs (with a dedicated guitar input) and seven analogue outputs (XLR, Humbuster ¼″, headphones and more) handle every live or studio scenario. Digital connections include S/PDIF In & Out and an 8×8 USB interface. FASLINK II supports two external FC controllers, and three expression jacks are available for pedals or switches.
Live Control & Layouts
Layouts let you re-configure the nine switches for preset selection, scene changes, individual effect bypass, looper control and more. Tap-and-Hold functions layer multiple commands on a single switch, granting enormous live flexibility.
Typical Use Case
The FM9 MK II Turbo is the all-in-one floorboard for players who demand dual Amp blocks, deep effects and extensive hands-on control in a single, road-tough chassis.
FM3 MK II Turbo: Compact Floor Processor
Form Factor & Workflow
The FM3 MK II Turbo delivers Fractal quality in a travel-friendly form factor with three footswitches, each featuring a mini display and coloured LED ring. Two DSP cores provide 10 % more power than the original FM3.
Amp & Effects Capacity
Every preset offers one Amp block (four channels) and one Cab block with two IR slots (blend and stereo options), plus a broad range of effects including Reverb, two Delays, two Drives and much more — ideal for rehearsal, home studio or full-blown stage rigs.
I/O
Three analogue inputs (separate guitar input plus stereo line) and five analogue outputs (including XLR main and headphones) cover typical gig and studio needs. Extras include a S/PDIF Out, two expression jacks and connectivity for up to two FC controllers via FASLINK II.
Flexible Use in Tight Spaces
Multiple Layouts and Tap-and-Hold commands make the three switches extraordinarily versatile. The FM3 is therefore perfect for small stages, practice rooms or as a desktop recording interface with an intuitive workflow.
Typical Use Case
If you’re constantly on the move, have limited stage real-estate or simply prefer a minimalistic desk setup, the FM3 MK II Turbo gives you the full Fractal experience in the smallest possible footprint.
Additional Differences & Enhancements
Preset Capacity & Compatibility
The Axe-Fx III stores 1024 presets, whereas the FM9 and FM3 each hold 512. Preset grid sizes are 14 × 6 on Axe-Fx III and FM9, and 12 × 4 on FM3. Axe-Fx III can load FM9/FM3 presets almost without limitation; the inverse is constrained by available blocks and CPU.
Tone Match & IR Capture
Only the Axe-Fx III features on-board Tone Match and IR Capture. FM9 and FM3 cannot create but can load captures and IRs generated on an Axe-Fx III.
Global Blocks (Axe-Fx III Only)
Need one master Amp or Cab setting across dozens of presets? Global Blocks make it happen — and they’re exclusive to the Axe-Fx III.
Integrating Traditional Amps
All three units support the four-cable method and other hybrid setups. Use only the effects, only the modelling, or combine Fractal preamps with a real power amp and guitar cab.
Further Technical Specs
For measurements, weight, USB channel counts (8 × 8 or 4 × 4), detailed I/O (XLR, Humbuster, headphones), Auto Input Impedance, pedal jacks and factory/user cab numbers, see the comparison table.
