Inputs & Outputs AM4

Fractal Audio is known for building audiophile-grade signal paths into guitar products, and the AM4 is no exception. Its low-noise “secret sauce” instrument input with Auto-Z impedance authentically loads your guitar pickups, while balanced outputs preserve signal integrity when going direct. An analog stereo insert provides Send and Return jacks for outboard gear, and a high-quality headphone amp supports silent practice and monitoring. Two Pedal ports each accept an expression pedal or external footswitch. For digital connectivity, AM4 includes S/PDIF I/O, USB-C for MIDI and 4×4 audio with re-amping, and 3.5 mm MIDI In and Out. The AM4 is powered by the included 9V DC 1.5A adapter.

1. INPUT

Connect your guitar, bass or other instrument to the Instrument Input using an instrument cable. You can also connect the outs of guitar pedals or other instrument level signals. Input Levels: the AM4 comes set for a typical guitar with hot pickups. If input clipping occurs, an IN CLIP warning is displayed and the Input Pad setting is temporarily increased.

2. INSERTS

These jacks provide a fixed insert point between the AM4’s internal effects and its balanced outputs. Use them to connect external gear while preserving the clean, low-noise performance of the balanced outputs. For mono, use a standard patch cable. For stereo, use a TRS-to-dual-mono insert cable (tip = left, ring = right)

3. OUTPUTS

Two balanced 1/4" outputs for connecting to FRFR speakers, mixers, audio interfaces, power amp/return, etc. For balanced connections, use TRS-to-XLR or TRS-to-TRS cables as appropriate. For unbalanced connections, use standard patch cables. The AM4 does not require or support the use of Humbuster™ cables. Because it is an amp modeler, the AM4 outs operate at adjustable line level rather than fixed unity gain.

4. HEADPHONE

A 3.5 mm stereo jack for headphones. 35Ω output impedance. Recommended headphone impedance < 600 Ω

5. PEDAL 1

¼″ TRS for an expression pedal or momentary/latching switch; fully assignable in SETUP › Pedals.

6. PEDAL 2

Same again for extra real-time control (volume, wah, tap-tempo, kill-switch, etc.).

7. SPDIF IN/OUT

Digital interconnection for SPDIF devices. The AM4
runs at a fixed sample rate of 48 kHz.

8. USB-C

Class-compliant 2 × 2 audio interface (24-bit/48 kHz) with MIDI-over-USB for AM4-Edit, DAW tracking and firmware updates.

9. MIDI IN

3.5 mm TRS; 5-pin DIN adapter supplied. Receives program- and control-change from controllers or DAW.

10. MIDI OUT

3.5 mm TRS. Sends AM4 data.

Accurate Amp Modeling

Fractal Audio’s industry-leading amp modeling is at the heart of the AM4. Built on the same uncompromising technology as the Axe-Fx III, it delivers the tone, feel, and authentic controls of real tube amps—from vintage classics to modern monsters, from sparkling cleans to elusive edge-of-breakup tones, to molten leads—and everything in between.

Unlike “take-it-or-leave-it” capture systems, the AM4 gives you a fully adjustable amp model every time: familiar amp controls behave like the originals, so you can dial in the tone you want instead of hunting through endless snapshots of someone else’s settings.

Four Channels, Endless Tone

The amp block includes four channels, giving you gapless switching between four amp-and-cab tones in every preset. With 104 presets, and 240+ amp models, the AM4 covers the range of a warehouse full of amps.
Intuitive Footswitch Control

New Amp Mode lets you select channels directly from the footswitches. The amp also includes a built-in tap-on/off boost, plus customizable channel colors. Other modes switch presets, scenes or effects and access tuner/tap tempo.
Hands-On Control

In Amp Mode, simple, authentic controls stay on screen, making the AM4 feel as fast and familiar as an amp or dedicated pedal—with gain and tone controls modeled on the originals.

Speaker Simulation, your way

Choose from intuitive DynaCabs™ or load your favorite IRs.

Integrated directly into the amp block, 45+ classic and modern guitar and bass DynaCabs™ deliver realistic speaker tones with an intuitive interface that allows you to position virtual mics in real-time—making it fast and easy to achieve a desired tone. You can also load your favorite Impulse Responses (IRs), from Fractal Audio or third- party creators, using UltraRes™ User Cabs for complete flexibility. A built-in room sim adds ambient dimensional sound without a separate block.

Visual Mic Positioning

DynaCab™ lets you shape tone in virtually the same way audio engineers do—by moving a mic on a speaker. Brighter or darker, more or less low end proximity… just move the mic and listen. No studio chops required—and no more sorting through too many static IRs!
Load your Favourite IR

You can also load your favorite Impulse Responses (IRs), from Fractal Audio or third-party creators. AM4 supports standard IR formats and uses UltraRes™ processing to deliver enhanced performance and low-end detail.

USB Audio and MIDI

USB gives the AM4 flexible features for recording, playback, and automation. You can record the AM4’s processed outputs or capture a DI for re-amping. You can play back computer audio through the AM4’s stereo outputs, or send tracks to the unit for processing, including re-amping. The AM4’s USB MIDI ports also appear in your DAW for automation and control.

A fast visual Editor and Manager

AM4-Edit lets you edit and manage your AM4 from a Mac or PC. Create and edit presets with full visual control. Use advanced tools like the Block Library, Channel Copy, Scene Swap, and Templates to accelerate your workflow. Integrated functions let you share and import presets and cabs, while a companion utility, Fractal-Bot, lets you back up your AM4, install updates, and more.
