Having received countless requests from guitarists for the benefits of the CFR12 passive wedges as an active monitor in the form of a 1x12” cab, Matrix Amplification has come up with a convincing answer. The Q12a.
The aim was to develop a system that makes full use of both the amp and cabinet modelling capabilities of new digital modelling pre-amps such as the Axe-Fx II. In a perfect world you should be able to develop a tone in your studio or rehearsal room and know that you will have exactly the same sound on-stage. This means you need a monitor that is completely transparent but also compact and easy to carry. In the case of larger gigs, when an additional send is used to feed the front of house system, you then know the audience is hearing the same out in the crowd as you are hearing on the stage.
Traditional guitar cabinets impart their own character on top of the tone the modellers create. Matrix have created a transparent solution that enables the modeller to shine through.
With a traditional guitar speaker being limited in frequency response it was important to utilise a full range system. This is normally achieved using one speaker cone to produce the low frequencies and a separate tweeter loaded on a horn to fill in the top end sparkle. The disadvantage of this approach is the sound is coming from two separate locations which create phasing issues as you walk around the stage. The guitarist’s ear is always a different distance to each source of sound. The solution to this is the use of a coaxial driver, whereby the high and low frequency drivers are located on the same axis.
The Q12a is loaded with a 12″ coaxial driver which has a dispersion pattern of 80 degrees, which ensures the same sweet spot of sound is heard by the guitarist as they move around the stage.
Power for the Q12a is provided by Matrix’s highly respected GM50 mono-bloc module, already proven and used by professional cab builders and DIY buffs alike. Delivering plenty of high quality class A/B power with the same voicing as our flagship GT1000 amp, it ensures an uncoloured, valve like feel with enough power to handle the loudest of on stage situations.
