Ich bin sehr, sehr zufrieden. Axe plus Atomic ist als Amp-Kombination unschlagbar (nun gut.. Andi-os 2:ninety Rectifier-Endstufe plus 4x12er Marshallbox einmal ausgenommen). Ich bin zwar nicht kritisch, was das Erreichen eines Soundideals angeht, denn ich bin wahrlich kein Idol-Sound-Nachbastler, aber ich bin sehr schwer zufriedenzustellen, wenn es um einen wirklich guten Klang geht, der all das mitmacht, was meine Hände ihm zumuten.

Bisher hatte ich stets etwas an den Verstärkern auszusetzen, mit denen ich spielte. Das konnte auch edles und teures Material sein. Manchmal beißt es in den Ohren, manchmal setzt es sich nicht durch, manchmal fügt sich ein Sound nicht ein, und manchmal klingt es einfach nicht. Das kann mit dem Axe sicherlich auch passieren. Aber.. der große Unterschied ist, dass man eine Werkzeugkiste mit der man flexibel die unterschiedlichsten Erfordernisse berücksichtigen kann.

Wenn man das Axe erst einmal verstanden hat und mit der unglaublichen Fülle an Parametern umzugehen gelernt hat, dann ist wohl nahezu jede Situation handlebar.

Gestern war übrigens Blues-Jamsession und rate mal, wer die bei weitem besten Gitarrensounds hatte? :-))

So. Ich muss nun wieder üben. Mit Axe gibt es ja keine Entschuldigung mehr ;-)

Hi Jacques

As an acoustic guitarist I have special requirements from an effects device. It mustn’t dampen any dynamics, the tone has to be open, but still warm and powerful. Up to now that was only possible with expensive 19-inch rack equipment, which eventually led to my having to carry 6-8 rack units full and a mixing desk to every gig, a guarantee for long set-up times.

A short flirt with multi-effects pedals only led to the conclusion that my tone was suddenly “narrow” and sounded very digital. Then I heard the first rumours about the Axe-Fx and they sounded very promising.

So, now I’ve been using an Axe-Fx Ultra for about three weeks. The immediate reaction when I turned it on for the first time was one of amazement: my guitar sounded better than ever. The sound has a wonderful size and depth: bass tones sound deep and contoured, mids aren’t at all muddy and the highs are warm and clear. No metallic piezo scratchiness any more – everything sounds warm, round and powerful. Then came the “shock”: you really have to spend time learning what it’s capable of. After a few days it was clear that here was a guitar processor that put everything I’d ever had before in the shade. In the space of two rack units I now have everything I ever had in 6-8 RU… and a whole lot more besides: nearly three times as many effects, endless effects combinations and multiple synchronised delays for creating wonderful walls of sound.

Spacey effects that allow me to create soundscapes that I wouldn’t have dreamed of before. Practically limitless control possibilities, be it dynamic control via playing attack or the fact that a short tap on a footswitch can trigger whole mountains of sound. I’ve always wanted something like this. The only extra effect that I still use is a loop-delay for loops, which I can then process perfectly with the Axe-Fx. The stereo effects loop in the Axe-Fx allows seamless integration and so I now have the perfect sound system, with an almost emotional sound quality and the minimum of fuss.

I’m curious to see what other wonderful things I have yet to discover about this magic box and what will come along in future updates (hopefully something especially for acoustic players). As yet I’ve only scratched the surface – the possibilities seem to be endless and are also endlessly inspiring.

The whole piece is improvised and was recorded live with just the acoustic guitar and the Axe-Fx. Both loops in the delay blocks are active (two loops running simultaneously) and each goes through differently programmed Crystal, Pitch and Multitap Delay blocks. The Amp/Cab blocks also get used for a few tones.

Just a quick thank you. I received my Axe-Fx on Tuesday, and having spent a few days getting to know how to use it, I can say I am very happy with it.

I have recieved the Ultra and tried It , it sounds better than any other digitalguitar unit so far G66 has been very helpful in all respects.

However I´m not 100% convinced that it´s good enough for my high demands. I´ve been building and modifiyng real tube amps for my own sounds for over 20 years. I am really hard to please when it comes to guitar sound. You can check my sound out at:

Hi, the Ultra arrived this afternoon and I just can't stop playing with it... some things have impressed me from the start:

- sound quality is amazing
- switching between patches and menus is really fast
- display is bright and clear (great!)

I'm currently playing with the default presets, I still have to dig into the menus and read the manual but I can say this is the best sounding machine I have ever plugged my guitars into, for sure... I am pretty sure I will have a bounce of pedals for sale on ebay very soon :)

Over the last week Jens and I have thoroughly tested the Axe-Fx Ultra. To get straight to the point, this gear is completely satisfying across the board!.

To be able to make the best possible comparison we used the following equipment in our rehearsal room:

- an Engl Savage Special Edition Head
- a TriAxis Vorstufe
- a Mesa Boogie Strategy 400 power amp
- two 4x12 Marshall cabs

- …and our rehearsal room speakers with power amp.

This way we could do comparison tests of a real top and cabs, a preamp with power amp and cabs, the Axe-Fx Ultra with a power amp and cabs and the Axe-Fx Ultra with power amp sim and cabinet sim over a PA.

In our first test we tried to recreate sounds from the TrAxis preamp and were mainly occupied with the various amp sims.

We nailed the TriAxis sounds convincingly and tried out lots of different amp models. The playing feel is really impressive. Of course, especially so when a guitar power amp and cabinet are attached to it. For me this is the only really important comparison, because that’s how I play my guitar live.

In our second test we took some famous riffs and sounds and tried to recreate them, for example, Aint Talkin’ Bout Love – Van Halen, Another Brick In The Wall (Solo) – Pink Floyd, Pride – U2, Die to Live – Vai, Peacemaker – Extreme and Alive von Pearljam. We nailed all of them.

This comparison is naturally a bit more difficult, because the original sound comes from a CD over the PA and the guitar over a power amp and cab, but what the hell.

We had fun and the sounds really were great and very original. It definitely makes sense to look up what equipment the artist actually used for the recording. If you start off making the sound with the right amp you will certainly get it. You hea straight away that the character of the sound is right. The rest is just a bit of fine-tuning and then you’ve got the sound

At this point another advantage of the Axe-Fx comes to light. Although there are no classic knobs to turn like on a real amp, it is still very simple, easy and intuitive to use.

Once you’ve had a look through the manual, adjusting settings in no problem at all and is quick and easy.

The effects that the Ultra offers cover everything a guitarist could want and as far as quality and settings options go they are absolutely top notch.

The conclusion is absolutely positive. The amps sound like real ones and certainly feel real when you are playing. The handling is simple and comfortable and the effects are of a quality that you can otherwise only have from expensive studio equipment. We couldn’t find any weaknesses with this piece of kit.

Praise is also due for your distribution. From the first telephone call to final delivery everything went smoothly. The Axe-Fx Ultra came with the newest firmware and a quieter fan and the support when we had questions was fast and competent. Keep it up!

Hi Sussi,

I've had just a few hours playing with the AXE-FX now. The basic sound of the amp models & their feel is far above the other devices I've used. I've been using a Tonlab LE for quite a while (which I think is the best of the rest as far as modlers for live use are concerned) but the AXE-FX is in a different league. Excellent sounds via the volume control is new to me on a digital device (despite what manufacturers say). 

Some of the presets are blistering sounds! I've found it difficult to try out many of the amps as I got stuck on the Marshall amps as they sound so good! It will just be difficult to decide which amp to use etc. etc.

I like the user-interface, not too hard to get to know.

I can see that this will be an end to my gear acquisition syndrome!

First off, thanks for the quick delivery.

I was very glad to see the personal greeting (I collected all the Bountys up straight away – they always come first!). In these days of Internet commerce I’m more used to computer-generated letters. Keep it up, I find it’s really great..

The German manual is very coolly written and it helped to ease the waiting time. As such I managed to prepare myself for the monster and didn’t get lost in the menus straight away. Thanks, Jochen.

As a kid I would have said:”Astschocke!” The thing has exceeded all my expectations; I got stuck on the first “BROWN” preset for ages, as the amp comes across so real (in sound AND feeling!) and it’s simply such good fun to play through. The brutal faction is complete and authentic. The Recto amps sound much much better than the Dual Rectifier I tested in a music shop a couple of days ago.

Once the word gets around you’re going to have a lot more to do!

I’ve been the proud owner of an Axe-Fx Ultra for a few months now..
 
I haven’t got all my sounds set up yet, but those that are fit into the band arrangement perfectly. Control via my pedals also works a treat.  
 
"As Horst Schlemmer once said, "My back’s giving me hell." This was also a good reason for this investment. No power amp, no cabinet. And here the Axe-Fx is miles ahead. I’ve used a large modelling amp and a 19” preamp for playing directly into the mixer, but neither of them have really satisfied me or the sound tech.. Since the Axe-Fx came along my signal has been going from the Ultra straight into the mixing desk.

Working with it is really easy. The translation into German is top and really easy to understand, though the handling is pretty much self-explanatory anyway. It’s a real “learning by doing” device.

Many thanks again for the quick delivery of the Ultra. Unfortunately the studio monitors that I ordered from a well-known Internet mail-order company didn’t arrive quite so quickly – so the first test had to wait a while :-/

But a few days ago everything arrived and the testing could begin :-). Now, what can I say – I’m absolutely thrilled! Finally I can practice at home with a decent sound – without raising the roof :-) – and with the same sounds that I’ll use in rehearsal and on stage! On top of this the thing is naturally a lot easier to transport than a tube amp with cabinet…

I gave up on my last attempt to use effects because the floor-based effects devices had a very detrimental effect on my sound even when they were turned off. So one stomp box after another got the bullet and had to go, until there was only a distortion pedal left. Result: three possible sounds. Not so with the Ultra! When I don’t use the effects they don’t change the sound. Also I no longer have to worry about my combination of distortion pedal and amp providing both a good lead and a good rhythm sound, which of course can only end in a compromise… With presets I can set up any combinations and go from a rhythm sound to a full-on lead tone at the press of a switch.

Furthermore I had recently bought a soundcard so that I could make a few recordings. Without a studio it’s pretty hard to record with a microphone… Another problem that has now been solved – just connect the sound card to the Axe-Fx and ready :-)

I haven’t noticed and negative points yet.

I have to be fair and say that I probably wouldn’t have bought a device costing €2.1k  had I not been able to test one belonging to my ex-teacher, Peter Autschbach first ;-)

After more than a month of use I can only say: definitely a good investment. Especially when recording you can save a huge amount of time.

Great effects, for me as a tube fetishist an unbelievable emulation of some amps. Especially the difficult crunch sounds of the Plexis, Matchless, etc come across really well. I haven’t yet managed to reproduce the sound of my 69 Marshall MKIIs with old Greenbacks in the cabs but I can still only say: Hats off!

My G-System has already left me and I’m currently looking for a new home for my Eventide ;-)

I have tested the unit and run the presets. What can i say, this is the holy grail for guitar players. It realy feels and responds like a full tube amp. About the new cooling fan, i can hear it but don't care.

Just a little note.  I am just letting you know that I received my Axe-Fx Ultra (six weeks ago) – I can’t believe its been that long.  I wanted to fully test and get to understand the Ultra before I let you know I had received it and was happy with it.

Wow, this product is totally outrageous to say the least.  I originally stumbled across the Axe-Fx last year while trying to find out information about Atomic amps. When I first read about the Axe-Fx I thought that’s a lot of money for an unknown brand, and at a glance it’s architecture looked somewhat similar to (although updated to include all modern features) my old Digitech GSP2101 which I bought back in the mid 90’s and still plug in now and again.  I suppose the main similarity is the ability to have effect run in whatever order you desire – including parallel. Now that’s really where the comparison ends.

I have been using amp modelling since around 2000/1, when I got my Roland VG-88.  I’ve gigged that unit live for a couple of without backline, so I know it inside out by now!  I also have a number of other modelling devices like Pods, Digitech and other Roland stuff.  Although these products all sound ok, I’ve always felt something was missing.  So I went looking for a way to make these other products sound better and more importantly feel better, that’s when I discovered this unit.

I glad I did come across the Axe-Fx as I’ve been able to program it and create patches that are just not possible with any other device out there.  The sound quality is top notch. Every guitar I plug in has its own sound.  The only down side to this is now I have to start upgrading the stock pickups (ceramic single coils) in most of my guitars…  This was on the cards for a while, but the Axe-Fx has finally showed me where my weakest link is :-)…

It is really easy to edit on this machine even without the editor! The interface is fast and logical.

I wish I had an Ultra 10 tens ago, it would have saved me a great deal of money and time! Now all I need are two of the up coming Atomic FR amps…

Can you please check to make sure I’m still on your list? I was last in touch with you about them around October last year.

Also I will need a foot controller and it looks like Fractal are getting somewhat near to releasing this too! Could you please add me to the list for this?  Do you happen to know if it will support multi pages of AI switches (like the Liquid Foot pro)? 

Now to finish off I would like to thanks you for the following; Being very professional, shipping the unit on the day (nobody like to have to wait ;-)), Changing the fan in the unit – My ultra in silent! And the box of chocolates was such a great touch.  I sing your praises and will be buying from you again.

Good morning,

The magic box arrived on schedule on Saturday! Excellent! My first impression is: absolutely ingenious!

It sounds very impressive and I now have exactly the possibilities I’ve always looked for.

Out 1 unbalanced for in-ear, XLR direct into the PA
Out 2 into the power amp! Perfect!

This is the first box I’ve owned where the lineouts into the mixer sounded better than the result through the power amp and cabinet, whereby the latter still sounds as if I had my good old tube head on the end of the cable!

So, a quick conclusion: I’m more than impressed!
